Congratulations to all ACC member schools that were involved in the 2023 ACC Championship Senior and Junior, Girls & Boys Basketball that has culminated in memorable grand finals over the past few weeks at Warwick Stadium.

The ACC Championship is the pinnacle of secondary school aged Girls & Boys Basketball within the association and had over 70 ACC member schools involved in 2023 from the metropolitan and country areas of WA.

The ACC Championship Basketball held preliminary pools during Term 1 2023 with a wide range of sub association groups, wildcard groups and one day carnivals conducted. The ACC Championship Elimination tournament then took place during Term 2 in both the senior (Yr10-12) and junior (Y7-9) categories.

Congratulations to all teams that progressed through to the elimination knockout phase where many thrilling games were played at the Round of 16, Quarter Final or Semi Final phase. It was again fantastic to see many member schools host elimination games within school gymnasiums and having different regional or metro schools visit the school that they may not be used to playing for these high-quality games. Thankyou to all competing schools for remaining committed and flexible during the early elimination phase in Term 2 and the spirit and generosity within the schools in the competition remains excellent.

The ACC would like to give special thankyou to Basketball WA for the ongoing support of one of WA’s strongest secondary school basketball competitions and to Reffing Hoops WA that provide a huge amount of highly talented and qualified referees and scoreboard officials across the tournament making it the most professional and enjoyable experience for all competitors.

The Grand Finals in the Seniors was played on the 23 May, Showcourt Court 1 at Warwick Stadium. The atmosphere was electric with many spectators adding to the grand final festival!

First was the Senior Girls Grand Final between La Salle and Kennedy. Kennedy came out strong in the first quarter shooting well and opening up a 26-12 early lead at Q1. The game tightened in Q2 and was an even battle as La Salle slowly started to halt the Kennedy offense and make some key points in transition. Kennedy eventually flicked the defensive switch applying some full court press and man on man defense during Q3 to open the match winning lead that would be too large to overcome. Kennedy controlled the game from this point forward and are to be congratulated on taking the Senior Girls Championship which is now the 3rd year in a row – 2021, 2022, and 2023! Special mention to grand final MVP performance from captain Latysha Derecourt (Kennedy) who was everywhere in all the key moments defending brilliantly and scoring when the team needed a key basket.

The Senior Boys Grand Final was a sensational game of skill and rapid ball movement between john Septimus Roe and Chisholm. The game was a highlight reel early in Q1 with some amazing plays and offensive shooting from both teams. Both teams would go on small offensive runs of 6-8 points as the game consistently swung back and forth during Q1 & Q2. John Septimus Roe opened what would turn out to be the match winning lead in Q3 with some great team passing and rebound 2nd chance opportunities that consistently put the Chisholm defense under pressure. Holding a 77-52 lead at 3 quarter time, John Septimus Roe continued to press in the final quarter to seal a memorable Senior Boys Championship. Edward Lual (John Septimus Roe) was causing all types of havoc for the Chisholm defenders with his mixture of outside 3-point shooting and his driving to the rim (dunking!) in claiming the Grand Final MVP. A star that is on the rise!

The Grand Finals in the Juniors were played on the 30 May at Warwick Stadium and were fantastic games to finish off the Junior Basketball Championship.

The Junior Girls Grand Final between St Norbert and Kennedy was a tight game throughout with St Norbert holding a slender 10-point lead for most of Q1-Q3. Eventually late in Q3 and early in Q4 the St Norbert girls went on a scoring blitz of 3-point shooting and driving to the basketball that broke the game open, taking the Championship over a determined Kennedy girls’ team who never gave up throughout.

The Junior Boys Grand Final had two very evenly matched teams with John Septimus Roe and Emmanuel CC. Both teams looked very strong the week prior during the semi final phase, setting up an excellent final. The game was evenly balanced throughout the first half with both teams scoring in a very high scoring and free flowing game. The second half became more of an arm wrestle defensively with John Septimus Roe making some key defensive adjustments and stops that opened the match winning lead that Emmanuel CC could not bridge. The game was a wonderful battle between two high quality squads stacked with elite young talent.

Congratulations to MVP players Reece Anticevic (St Norbert) and Mason Clark (John Septimus Roe) for being influential players with outstanding grand final performances.
