Based on the latest Government COVID-19 announcements the ACC is recommending the following guidelines for school sport in the Perth and Peel region up to 12:01am 8th Saturday May 8th, 2021.
- Inter-School sport can continue this week.
- Outdoor venues may proceed. Indoor venues may also proceed but players, coaches and officials MUST wear masks.
- The 2sqm rule per person must be maintained at all venues.
- ACC advice for this week is to NOT ALLOW spectators.
MASKS
- It is mandatory that all people (including staff) that aren’t primary or preschool age, must always wear masks while indoors whether playing or spectating (unless eating, drinking or swimming).
LIGHNING CARNIVALS
The ACC Year 8/9 Lightning Carnivals scheduled for Wed 5th May has been postponed and will not go ahead this week. ACC will announce an alternative date for these events ASAP. Given the fact that the Basketball players MUST wear masks while playing and the uncertain nature of the current COVID situation, the ACC office has decided that it is prudent to postpone such a large-scale event.
BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
- The ACC is recommending that all Basketball Championships matches for this week be postponed. ACC will make an announcement ASP about the revised playing schedule.
- Basketball WA applied to the State Government for an exemption not to wear masks when playing Basketball indoors. This request was refused, and Basketball WA made the decision to cancel all WABL and NBL1 West games. ACC Championship Basketball is at a similar level to WABL, and the ACC recommendation is to follow the Basketball WA decision. It is not practical to move games at this level to outdoor hard courts as it may pose a safety risk to players. Similarly, wearing a mask for a full basketball match would be uncomfortable and could pose breathing difficulties for some players and officials.
SUB-ASSOCIATION SPORT
- ACC sub-association sport can continue at all venues, indoor and outdoor. If games are played indoor, then all players, coaches and officials MUST wear a mask.
- Schools have the option to move indoor games to outdoor venues if it is not feasible to wear a mask while playing indoors.
- Any games that are NOT PLAYED at indoor venues this week will be considered as postponements and schools can reschedule these games to a future date.
- Schools in each Association, in conjunction with each other, will make decisions on whether indoor games proceed this week dependant on the willingness and ability of players and referees to play with masks. As a rule of thumb, the more vigorous and aerobic the sport , the less likely that players will be able to play while wearing a mask. Individual schools can make their own decision based on the sport, playing level of the students and availability of outdoor facilities.
- Schools utilizing external indoor venues must contact the venue operator and cancel their court bookings if they decide not to play at these indoor venues.
We all understand how frustrating this is for our school sporting programs , but our community’s safety and health are a priority, so we will continue to follow the latest guidelines and requirements.
