A fantastic game of cricket was played between the ACC v State Schools on Friday 15 March at Murdoch University. The game has a proud history in the WA cricket community and both teams were stacked with some of the best underage cricketing talent in WA.
State Schools headed out to bat first under clear skies, however the mighty quick Owen Bower (Newman College) took the wickets of the openers, and one of our spinners Michah Akkinapalli (Mazenod College) took the third; State Schools were now 3/26. State Schools dug in and put on a parternship before Riley Gould (Mazenod College) took the 4th and 5th wickets, with State Schools now 5/69. This saw some key batters now at the crease for State Schools, so our bowlers had to keep their line and length, while ensuring nothing hit the boundaries. Our Captain, Zed Hollick (Sacred Heart College) took the pegs out next, getting a clean bowled, bringing in another strong batter for State Schools. Two runs later Zed had another with State Schools really needing to dig deep, being just 7/80. A solid partnership was then formed, with one young batter coming in and top scoring for his team on 36, but the ACC had them rolled at 10/159 after 44.1 overs.
Our strong bowlers performed.
Owen Bower 3/30 off 8.1
Riley Gould 1/12 off 4
Micah Akkinapalli 2/35 off 10
Zed Hollick 3/30 off 10
The lunch break allowed both teams to re-fuel and strategise ahead of the second innings. Vice Captain Kaleb White (St Mark's ACS), Aidan Carberry (Newman College), Zed Hollick (Sacred Heart College) and Harrison Giancono (Mazenod College) were our top order batters, and while an early wicket was lost seeing the ACC 1/21, the boys dug in, with the next wicket not falling until 2/68. Harrison top scored for the game with 64*, with the ACC making the required runs after 41.1 overs.
Special thanks are extended to the amazing coaching staff team of 2024, and to WA Cricket for providing a wonderful experience for our top ACC cricketers.
