The ACC Championship Senior Basketball held preliminary pools during Term 1 2023 with a wide range of sub association groups, wildcard groups and one day carnivals conducted. The ACC Championship Elimination tournament then took place during Term 2 in both the senior (Yr10-12) and junior (Y7-9) categories. Over 70 ACC member schools were involved in 2023 from the metropolitan and country areas of WA.

Congratulations to all teams that progressed through to the elimination knockout phase where many thrilling games were played at the Round of 16, Quarter Final or Semi Final phase. It was again fantastic to see many member schools host elimination games within school gymnasiums and having different regional or metro schools visit the school that they may not be used to playing for these high-quality games. Thankyou to all competing schools for remaining committed and flexible during the early elimination phase in Term 2 and the spirit and generosity within the schools in the competition remains excellent.

The ACC would like to give special thankyou to Basketball WA for the ongoing support of one of WA’s strongest secondary school basketball competitions and to Reffing Hoops WA that provide a huge amount of highly talented and qualified referees and scoreboard officials across the tournament making it the most professional and enjoyable experience for all competitors.

The Grand Finals in the Seniors was played on the 23 May, Showcourt Court 1 at Warwick Stadium. The atmosphere was electric with many spectators adding to the grand final festival!

The Senior Girls Grand Final was played between La Salle and Kennedy. Kennedy came out strong in the first quarter shooting well and opening up a 26-12 early lead at Q1. The game tightened in Q2 and was an even battle as La Salle slowly started to halt the Kennedy offense and make some key points in transition. Kennedy eventually flicked the defensive switch applying some full court press during Q3 to open the match winning lead. Kennedy controlled the game from this point forward and are to be congratulated on taking the Senior Girls Championship which is now the 3rd year in a row – 2021, 2022, and 2023! Special mention to grand final MVP performance from captain Latysha Derecourt (Kennedy) who was everywhere in all the key moments defending brilliantly and scoring when the team needed key points.

The Senior Boys Grand Final was a sensational game of skill and rapid ball movement between John Septimus Roe and Chisholm. The game was a highlight reel early in Q1 with some amazing plays and offensive shooting from both teams. Both teams would go on mini offensive runs of 6-8 points as the game consistently swung back and forth during Q1 & Q2. John Septimus Roe opened what would turn out to be the match winning lead in Q3 with some great team passing and rebound 2nd chance opportunities that consistently put the Chisholm defense under pressure. Holding a 77-52 lead at 3 quarter time, John Septimus Roe continued to press in the final quarter to seal a memorable Senior Boys Championship. Edward Lual (John Septimus Roe) was causing all types of havoc for the Chisholm defenders with his mixture of outside 3-point shooting and his driving to the rim (dunking!) in claiming the Grand Final MVP.
