46 schools participated in the 2023 ACC Soccer Championship.
The ACC Championship Soccer was held throughout Term 2 with a range of sub association groups and one day carnival pools. The One Day Carnival pools took place at Lark Hill, Curtin University, Mercy College, UWA Sports Park and Britannia Reserve on the 18 May. The elimination bracket took place during weeks 1-6 of Term 3.
ACC Championship Girls Grand Final Result: South Coast 2 def Mercy 0
The 2023 ACC girls Soccer Championship grand final was held Wednesday 23 August at Litis Stadium (Floreat Athena).
Mercy and South Coast were both very strong teams through the initial pool stage and had commanding performances in the elimination quarter finals and semi-finals to make it into the grand final.
The scene was set for a great rematch of the 2021 and 2022 grand finals. The first half of the match was an even contest with both teams having opportunities in the scoring box. South Coast were controlling the possession; however, Mercy was looking dangerous on the counterattack into space.
An even start was broken shortly before half time with a converted penalty for South Coast after some great attacking build up. South Coast was quick to double the lead after half time and increase the advantage on the scoreboard that Mercy was unable to make up. Mercy continued to attack in the final 20 minutes looking to find the net, however, South Coast was resolute and earned an impressive 2-0 victory (for a 3 peat of ACC Championships – Senior Girls Soccer). A top game was played by South Coast captain Brooke Burdette who was rewarded with the Grand Final MVP Award.
ACC Championship Boys Grand Final Result: Servite 1 (4) def South Coast 1 (3)
The boy’s final between Servite and South Coast was set to be a thrilling game with both teams fielding highly talented line ups. The anticipation was high with a large crowd in attendance.
The game was competitive and hard fought with both teams having opportunities to score at regular intervals. The momentum of the game changed on numerous occasions as each team would control field position and force the opposition to defend for periods of time. Servite scored a great goal late in the first half and then South Coast answered this goal almost immediately keeping things even at 1-1.
As the clock kept ticking and the game came down to the final minutes, every player lifted their intensity. Both teams had opportunities in the remaining minutes to score and seal the victory. Ultimately, full time sounded and both teams were heading to penalties. In a thrilling penalty shootout where all players are to be commended, it took until the fifth round before the game was decided. Servite goalkeeper James Komadina came up with a huge save, earning Servite the 4-3 victory. James Komadina was awarded the MVP award with numerous goal saving efforts throughout the match.
Both Grand Finals were played in tremendous spirit and all players should be very proud of the way they presented and played the game; competitively but respectfully at all times.
