ACC Championship Girls Grand Final Result: South Coast 3 def Mercy 0

The 2022 ACC girls Soccer Championship grand final was held Wednesday 24 August at Litis Stadium (Floreat Athena).

Mercy and South Coast were both very strong teams through the initial pool stage and had commanding performances in the elimination quarter finals and semi-finals to make it into the grand final. The scene was set for a great rematch of the 2021 grand final. The midfield battle was enthralling and both teams had opportunities on fast breakaways in the first 20 minutes. South Coast kicked a decisive first goal prior to half time that gave them a pivotal momentum boost. The second half was again very tightly contested. South Coast capitalising on some great field position and trapping the ball in the front half to score two more goals and put the game beyond Mercy reach. The Mercy girls never gave up and stuck at the task to the final whistle, however, earning back-to-back championships was South Coast Baptist with an all-round strong 3-0 result. An elite game in the midfield from Rachel Gillies (South Coast) across the full game earning MVP. Rachel controlled the possession and tempo and ensured the team stayed in control of the contest.

ACC Championship Boys Grand Final Result: Mercy 3 def John XXIII 1

The boys final between John XXIII and Mercy was destined to be a cracking game with attacking flair and strong players on both sides of the ball. The game attracted a tremendous crowd at Litis Stadium on Wednesday 24 August and followed on from the girl’s grand final. In a fast and attacking start, Mercy scored an amazing solo early goal. It was one of the best goals seen in school age football with the Mercy player cleanly receiving an over the top long ball received from deep in defense, trapping it with one touch, and then firing off on goal with the right boot from long range into the top corner. It was a momentous and pivotal strike that would ultimately define the game. After this goal, both teams settled into the game and were defensively very sound. The 1 -0 result at half time was still on a knife edge. Mercy scored an early second half goal to take a 2-0 lead, but this was almost immediately followed by a John XXIII goal to bring the game back to 2-1. John XXIII enjoyed a 10 minute purple patch of attack but were unable to level the scores. Mercy defended as a team very well and then took the opportunity when it counted to land the decisive goal and 3-1 lead with just over 5 minutes remaining.  Mercy were able to take out a memorable victory over a determined John XXIII team. Special congratulations to Mercy captain Josh Bilaloski for the amazing game through midfield and scoring a great goal in the second half claiming the MVP award.

Both Grand Finals were played in tremendous spirit in 2022 and all players across the teams should be very proud of the way they presented and played the game competitively but respectfully at all times. A great day was had by all involved.
